Stand up! Don’t take ergonomic issues sitting down.
Did you ever see the commercial about standing up while working? Sure it looks like just the new wave. However, does it have any basis for improving health? Ergonomics is real. It is important to coordinate “the design of … physical working conditions with the capacities and requirements of the worker.”
Furthermore, consider the height of your chair. Is it at the proper height? Sitting and typing on the computer all day can impact us just as bad as a tennis player getting tennis elbow. Work can be more than a pain in the neck. “While you might not think of it, sitting down all day can be a very stressful position to maintain, especially on your joints like those in your back and knees.”
It’s Time to Get Smart
Consequently, employers are going to have to get smart. It is time to develop a new strategy for productivity. They will have to do more than drive employees to work harder. It is important to provide an environment where employees can work smarter. Schools are taking notice! “Scientists have discovered using standing desks can improve the cognitive function of children by between seven and 14 per cent.”
Out with the Outdated and Unhealthy Office Environment
It is not about being “with it.” It is more about productivity. It is time to get healthy! Let’s get smart! Let’s strategically update our work environments.

He begs you, “Take a stand.”
It’s Not Safe
No! Hush the one who would threaten with fear. That it is right, you are so certain. Together, right and certainty, with courage, forms a cord with which to bind “now” to the action that is needed. The essence calls for you to ignore safety. Herald responsibility and accountability instead. He whispers, “Be strong.”
It’s Not Politic
Since when has an expedient warning come with dignity and tactfulness. “Cry aloud” supersedes poise. How quickly the moment can pass. The minutes wasted. The never returning seconds disappear like a vapor. Alas, those hanging in the balance might perish. He implores you, “Act!”
It’s Not Popular
Is not popularity fleeting? Rather, those who stand alone are those who stand tall. Even still, many more hesitant than you delight in your courage. Yes, they even are encouraged. Another voice is needed. Will we wait for one more year? Will we simply recall the former words? He commands us, “Stand Alone!”

Especially relevant, with any cyclic processes, preparation is the best follow-up act for celebration. When spirits are high, teams have been motivated, and morale has been built, the planning senses are potent with success ideology. Now is the time, using the notes taken during reflection and the latest technology, paradigms, and best of breed system, prepare for 2017 successes.

In conclusion, the song phrase, taken from the hymn, ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, has a much deeper meaning than just a holiday ditty. The lyrics speak of One that made and makes all things happen. Deliverance is herald! Peace is characterized. Joy overflows. Salvation is available. Though the material advertisements threaten to lull our minds, let us reflect on the real reason for the season. So, what did we learn from Election 2016? Your reading of this post comforts me. Why? You did not just say, “Oh, another blog about the elections; what difference does it make now?” Whether you voted or not, you did not take an apathetic approach to this post. Nevertheless, many individuals were apathetic with regards to the elections. Why?
The Ostrich Approach?
Were people taking an approach like the ostrich, burying their head in the sand? “Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand.”1 An ostrich, when frightened, may sometimes lay flat with their neck and head level with the ground for camouflage. The ostrich primarily practices this to protect its eggs. It never buries its head in the ground.
The strategy to not vote because one did not like the choice of either candidate does not imitate the wise actions of the ostrich. Per Plato, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”2 A lot worse could end up governing you. Will apathy benefit future generations?
Election 2016 – So, what did we learn?
I learned that apathy is not the answer. As a spiritual person, I learned that there are times we can be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good. A friend clearly said to me “the gospel is all about social justice.” I learned that I need to, first and foremost, vote; if not for the candidate, at least, for the person that will give me more time. More time for what, you ask?
We need to vote for more time to build up, encourage, and develop leaders we can support. I leave with you this quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.,
“And so we shall have to do more than register and more than vote; we shall have to create leaders who embody virtues we can respect, who have moral and ethical principles we can applaud with enthusiasm.”3 What did we learn? #CreateLeaders
I did a search on the internet for the words ‘hang time.’ Amazingly, it yielded meanings I would never have considered. The search produced the definition, “the time it takes for a paper airplane to come back down after being thrown in the air.” Another read, “the amount of hair left ‘hanging’ off the scalp after a cornrow.” Most noteworthy, the famed use of the term would be “the amount of time a person floats in the air,” especially related to sports. Remembering Michael Jordan’s most famous dunk, it is not a surprise to know that his longest hang time recorded is 0.92 seconds.1
A New Hang Time Meaning
Would you be willing to consider another more serious meaning of “hang time”? I honestly believe that such players in a more remarkable occupation record in the hours. Not in seconds, but they record hours a day several inches above the ground. How often do we consider the amount of time such workers in the moving and installation industry spend in the air? As recent as July 14, 2016, The News & Observer heralded the unveiling of plans for two seven-story buildings to be built downtown as part of the continued development of the Durham Innovation District. Several elements of the article captivated my attention; items that were present in the material and items that were not.
Durham Innovation District
Naturally, the article image (above, Courtesy of Duda Paine Architects), rendering the two new buildings to be named North and South and capturing the beauty of the anticipated landscape, enticed my gaze. What also intrigued my thoughts was how the post skillfully included various “making it happen” contributors, those who might be considered the “heroes” of development. In addition to Duda Paine Architects, the post included Longfellow Real Estate Partners, Measurement Inc., and Duke University. As a lessee of the new development, the article also announced Duke Clinical Research Institute. With appreciation for their contribution–and rightly so they should receive recognition–I paused.
So what elements, not included, beg for attention? Amazingly, that which the article mentions inspires a beyond the surface exploration. Look through the windows of the two office buildings. See rooms, technology space, the retail businesses, the restaurants. Did you see it? Yes, imagine the employers, employees, managers, store owners, waiters, and waitresses, and chefs diligently engaged in service in their varied workspaces. Yes, workspaces! How did those workspaces come about?
Thinking of such construction projects, we may expectedly picture the abled excavators, electricians, and plumbers, as well as those contractors handling the framing, priming, and painting. After the laying of the carpet, and perhaps while completing the landscaping, the work of the unsung heroes must take place to make the project usable. Yes, the work of the workspace movers and installers.

Proving Lives Matter One Project at a Time
Whether the terms inspire you or offend you, the country is experiencing a division regarding the terms “Black Lives Matter” versus “All Lives Matter.” Many raise questions about the intention of the user of either term. Is anybody listening to the voices of the community? There are some who are listening; they are acting with sincere intention.
There are entrepreneurs in the community, though not as visible or verbal, who prove every day that lives matter. The often overlooked small business such as staffing companies or moving and installation companies are in the trenches supporting the community through the altruistic avenue of employment. If there is ever a way to prove that lives matter, it is to hire somebody.
Consider Jason, the day he receives his first paycheck! See him walking into the credit union to make the deposit with a pleasing smile on his face and his head slightly tilted in the “I earned this” position; the thrill of independence is all too noticeable. Day after day, he gains confidence as his work ethic and acumen in his position increase.

Of recent, while reviewing the tips for visitors hiking through a canyon in Nevada, my eyes zeroed in on the warning of snakes. It read “Watch out for snakes under or on top of rocks.” While the warning did not cause me to turn around and go home, my focus was more concentrated as I walked the narrow, sometimes rocky, path. Even more recent, when reading a thought about workers’ compensation, I came across a warning concerning subcontractors. It read “Watch out for uninsured subcontractors.” Seriously? Is there an actual risk to be avoided?
The presence of mind that crafty, coiling creatures could verily be waiting around every bend of the trail admittedly created a somewhat peeked adventurous excitement to the canyon trek. However, for the business or general contractor, reading a caution about a subcontractor who cannot provide a valid certificate of insurance, a somewhat concerning unsettled ambivalence may be felt. Such ambivalence could lower your perceived value in the eyes of the employer, engendering fewer opportunities. The subcontractor that has her own workers’ compensation certainly has more safety appeal.
Consider Jack the contractor, who can provide a valid certificate of insurance any time he responds to a project advertisement. He shares with Artie, the general contractor, “I am certainly a less liability to you having my insurance!” This adds value to Jack’s pitch for employment. Artie sees Jack as a prudent partner in business, a responsible person. Artie faces insurance audits with confidence; he is happy. Artie consistently calls upon Jack for different projects; Jack is happy.
So, what about the adventurous excitement of completing a project with a sense of security that there is available coverage for any job mishap?
